Which Breast Augmentation Method Provides Better Results?

Breast augmentation surgeries are performed to increase the size of breasts. The increase in size is achieved with implants placed inside the breasts. The main objectives of breast augmentation surgeries can be summarized as increasing the breast size and shaping the breast. With the use of implants, breasts can be increased in size, volume and can become firmer and change shape.

When it comes to methods of breast augmentation surgery, it is possible to mention these methods in two ways. The first is how the implants are placed in the breast, and the second can be referred to as the location in which the implants are placed in the breast. In breast augmentation surgeries, access to the inner tissue of the breast is gained through the incisions on or around the breast and implants are placed into newly created pockets. Depending on the location of  the points providing access to the inner tissue of the breast and according to the locations of the pockets created in the breast, breast enlargement surgery techniques differ.

The fruitfulness of the results obtained from a breast augmentation surgery is influenced by the operation itself and the physical structure of the person, as well as by the postoperative care and caution.

Cosmetic and plastic surgery is quite an individual type of surgery. As aesthetic and plastic surgeries are elective surgeries, while there are some standard and general procedures, each surgery should be specifically planned for that individual patient. Breast augmentation surgeries are one of the most performed plastic surgeries in the world and there are various techniques and methods used for them. Although it may be possible to make some generalizations, it will be not right to mention one single ideal method for every patient.

It can be said that there are four basic methods for placing the implants from the access points to the breast during breast augmentation surgeries. These points can also be referred to as incision sites on the skin. Access to the breast is provided through these incisions, and the implants are placed into the pockets that created in the breast.

The most preferred method for implant placement is through the access provided to the breast from the incisions made under the inframammary folds. This method can provide the surgeon with a wider range of access, allowing the implants to be placed more precisely. The surgical scar can also be hidden under the inframammary folds.

The second most preferred method for implant placement is through the access provided to the breast from the circular incisions made around the nipples. The surgical scar can be disguised by the pigmentation of the areola. This method can be preferred more in operations where a breast lift is also performed.

The third preferred method for implant placement is through the access provided to the breast from the incisions made in the underarm area. It is an endoscopic method where cameras can be used. If a revision is needed, it may not be possible to make a re-entry from the same incision line.

Fourth method  for implant placement is through the access to the breasts from incisions made into the upper part of the navel. Empty, folded implants are delivered to the breasts and filled after they are inside. The scar is hidden in the navel and if a revision is needed, it may not be possible to make a re-entry from the same incision line.

In addition to the aforementioned incision techniques for breast augmentation surgeries, techniques regarding the location where implants are placed within the breast can also be mentioned. The two most known methods can be expressed as under the muscle approach and over the muscle approach. In under the muscle method, the implants are placed under the pectoral muscles. In over the muscle method, the implants are placed over the pectoral muscles, under the tissue of the mammary glands. There are also implant positioning techniques such as the sub-fascial technique and ’’dual plane’’ technique. Implants positioning techniques should be decided on according to the anatomy of the patient. Some techniques are more suitable for some people with certain anatomies and this affects the results.
