Nose Aesthetics
Nose aesthetics, also known as rhinoplasty, is an aesthetic procedure which changes the size, position and shape of the nose. Located at the center of the face, the nose is a structure that influences your image most. Of course, it also serves for breathing.
You are a good candidate for nose aesthetics if you are dissatisfied with the shape, size, or angle of your nose, if you have a low or wide nose tip, if you think your nose is disproportionate to the rest of your face (if your nose is arched, bigger or smaller compared with your face), or you have breathing problems due to internal deviations.
Nose Aesthetics (Rhinoplasty) Planning
As a standard procedure, I do a second consultation with each rhinoplasty patient before surgery. During this session, together with my patient I evaluate my patient’s face and nose after taking photos. I design and prepare a simulation of the nose which my patient desires and which I believe is most suitable. Thus, we reach a common point in terms of my patient’s expectation and the nose I have in mind which I believe best suits my patient. In this way, I get a better understanding of my patient and we design a nose that fits his/her face.
How is Nose Surgery Performed?
Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia in a hospital environment. By preserving intranasal support structures, bone and cartilage can be removed, inserted or corrected according to the desired shape. Thus, the size of your nose can be increased, shrunk, shortened or extended. Next, your skin and other soft tissues are reshaped to take the shape of the underlying structure. There are also operations called “tip plasty” which is only applied to lift and reduce size of nose tip. The use of open or closed technique for tip-plasty depends on the choice of plastic surgeon.
Can the Nose be Reshaped Non-Surgically?
The bone and cartilage structure of the nose cannot be changed by any non-surgical method. However, an addition of fillers to soft tissues or Botox applications to nose tip can change the shape of the nose. In suitable noses, the arch may be made less visible, and nose tip may be slightly lifted by non-surgical methods. Correction of asymmetries is even possible in some patients.
Open Technique / Closed Technique
Two methods are generally practiced in rhinoplasty, open or closed technique. For open rhinoplasty, incisions are made outside, at the bottom of the nose and combined with other incisions hidden in the nose. The intranasal structures can be more clearly defined in the open approach. The scar on the lower part of the nose heals to become almost invisible. In closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are made entirely within the nose. Since these incisions are concealed, there are no scars outside the nose after surgery. However, in closed technique rhinoplasty, not all structures can be exposed as much as in open technique. In my practice of rhinoplasty, since I use both techniques, I make the choice of technique according to suitability of the technique for each patient.
Correction of Nasal Deviation and Breathing Problems
Nasal deviation is usually the major cause of breathing problems. Sometimes deviation is visible from outside. Sometimes there is a deviation that only blocks the breathing pathway inside the nose. Visible or not, deviations must be corrected during rhinoplasty ensure better breathing.
Rhinoplasty Recovery Process
Generally, even though bruising and swelling do not usually develop after nasal aesthetics, these can sometimes occur depending on operation technique. These bruises vary from person to person. This condition is associated with the skin type and coagulation rate of each patient.
I usually do not put a tampon or similar materials in the nose during surgery. I use intranasal splints in severely deviated noses. Due to use of silicone splints (Doyle splint), the patient has both comfortable breathing and increased pain comfort.
The healing time following a rhinoplasty is 7 to 10 days. Many patients return to work, school and social life at the end of this short period. But keep in mind that the nose assumes its final shape in 1 year.
Rhinoplasty Prices
The price of a typical rhinoplasty surgery usually depends on factors such as surgery duration, degree of difficulty of the operation, and the choice of hospital. Physical examination of the nose is required for a correct price evaluation.
