Can Breast Implants Be Used For Life?

 Even though the implants placed inside the breasts during breast augmentation surgeries do not have an expiration date, they cannot be guaranteed to last for a lifetime. Physical structure of the patient, their lifestyle, the surgeon who performs the surgery and the techniques used, the type and quality of the implants can be expressed as the elements affecting the longevity of breast implants.

In plastic surgery communities, patients with breasts implants are told that they will have to have this operation again during their lifetime or they will need to have their implants removed at some point and that the average breast implant lifespan is around 10 years. But this does not mean that 10 years after a breast augmentation surgery, the breast implants will have to be replaced or removed. There are many types of different body and breast structures and many kinds of implants. There are many variables such as the the substance that the implants are made of, the outer surface surrounding the implants, the size and the shape. There are also different types of surgical techniques and skills. Therefore, the lifespan of breasts implants can vary. Depending on all these factors, it is possible that breast implants may need to be changed within 10 years after a breast augmentation surgery, or the breasts implants can be used for up to 20 years without the need for any intervention.

It may be necessary to replace or remove breast implants for reasons such as becoming worn off, rupture, displacement within the breast tissue, causing ripples on the breast skin, becoming palpable from the outside, hardening of the tissue around the implants, deformation of the implants and sagging of the breasts over time.

Due to the new developments in technology and surgical techniques, lifespan of breast implants can continue to increase, along with the ability of breast implants providing more natural and aesthetic results. But one of the most important factors which is the human body element should not be forgotten.
