Can A Rhinoplasty Be Repeated?

If a once performed surgery is to be repeated, it is called a revision surgery. Rhinoplasty surgeries are operations which may need to be repeated, sometimes more than once. Due to visual or functional problems, revision rhinoplasty surgery may be an option if the targeted result is not achieved after the first rhinoplasty surgery.

With rhinoplasty operations, the bone and cartilage structures of the nose can be permanently changed. The need for a revision rhinoplasty surgery can be seen shortly after surgery or can present itself in the long term. While this need can occur due to unsatisfactory results about appearance, it can also occur due to a newly formed or an unresolved functional issue. And sometimes it can occur due to both kinds of issues. In such cases, rhinoplasty operations can be repeated, as revision rhinoplasty operations, they can be performed again.

 

Sometimes patients can need tertiary or quaternary revision surgeries in addition to secondary surgeries. Even though each revision surgery makes any possible future revision surgery harder, with a correct choice of surgeon, even in cases with multiple revisions, good results can be obtained. Every repeated operation may make the case more difficult for the next operation. Every rhinoplasty surgery creates changes in the cartilage structure of the nose and triggers formation of scar tissue. The next surgery will be more difficult to perform surgery on a nose that has undergone so many changes and so far from its original structure. However, good results can be obtained in cases where repeat operations have been performed with the selection of the right doctor. With revision surgeries, existing problems can sometimes be eliminated with small touch-ups, sometimes with extensive, reconstructive approaches, and the patient can achieve satisfactory results.

When there is no longer any swelling in the nose after surgery, already existing deformities hidden by the swelling can show themselves. Or the contrary may happen, the patient may think that they need a revision rhinoplasty operation, without having completed the healing process and losing all the swelling in their noses. This can resolve as the patient continues to heal and the swelling subsides, the results can become more and more pleasing to the patient. But ideally, one should wait for 1 year after the first rhinoplasty surgery until they are fully healed, to make a decision about having a revision rhinoplasty surgery.
