Is Bichectomy A Harmful Procedure? What Are The Downsides?

Bichectomy operations involve the removal and the reduction of the fat tissues inside the lower cheeks called Bichat’s fat pads through two small incisions made inside the mouth. Bichectomy operations do not involve much of risks and can be called to be simple procedures when performed by knowledgable, experienced surgeons who know the facial anatomy well enough.

It can be said that there are no downsides of a bichectomy operation if it is performed correctly and the patient completes the recovery period without any complications. However, if the surgical procedure is not performed correctly and the patient does not pay attention to post-operative care, undesirable conditions may be encountered. It is important that the surgeon who will perform the procedure will be able to find the fat pads easily that are to be removed by the operation. Excessive incisions, prolonged inability to find the fat pads can cause extra trauma to the tissues and cause extra edema. There are also facial nerves close to the area where the incisions are made. If the nerves are damaged, temporary or permanent loss of facial movements and facial sensation may be partially or completely lost. Excess scar tissue formation can exert pressure on nerves, cause pain, and create stiffness in the cheek tissue. Salivary glands can be damaged due to their proximity to the area of fat pads.

Each person’s anatomy is different, and as some anatomies age, they are more likely to experience volume loss in the lower cheek region, which is intended to be made slimmer with a bichectomy operation. People with this type of anatomy may not be suitable for a bichectomy operation, or the amount of fat to be removed may need to be less. Otherwise, an undesired, gaunt apperance in the cheeks may occur over time.

As the incisions of bichectomy operations are made inside the mouth, they carry the risk of being infected if not looked after. As the mouth contains a large amount of bacteria, after a bichectomy operation, oral hygiene is very important. You should follow the temporary eating instructions. It is beneficial to avoid food that can provide nourishment for the bacterial growth inside the mouth and avoid intense chewing movements in order not to cause distress to the stitches inside the mouth. You should brush your teeth after every meal and use the recommended mouth wash.
